HK's parking meters to accept smart cards

Great to know that HK has embraced the samrt card technology. They have two options with your e-card, one which is just cash, while the other option allows e-card holders to transfer from your account. (I prefer just the e-card on its own, you drop it, it's just lost cash with no attachements to your accounts, yes I am paranoid!) Here is the article from HK government's news site : Parking meters to accept Octopus cards
Wonder will this ever take off in Ireland, not just for parking meters, but smart cards in general! :P

Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers

Wow, that was a good show at Collin's Barracks today. The drummers were having fun performing on a bright sunny day today (even though on of the acts was a call for rain!). The kids were having fun, expecially a young girl jumping to the beat and tempo of the drums. I loved the mega drum which was hit with a baseball bat, definately can do that with an image of my least favourite person as the drum!
Well, they have a site where you can check out their samples and video clips - www.mugenkyo.com
They have a dojo as well, but it is in England. Sounds fun, but a bit to travel to get there though! Well done, Collin's Barracks for bringing such a wonderful act to your "Lazy Sunday" event.

Usability testing

I am on an Open University course - User interface design and evaluation, and this Dilbert cartoon reflects that! ;)
The course is going well, passed my first assignment, albeit the pang of disappointment of not getting a higher grade, oh well, I have forgotten the horrors of typing reports. Best get in to it, as this maybe my next career move to something I like. I don't mind a pass, but gaining theory is also important as industry experience. Something to fill in the empty evenings I suppose (although I find it hard to study when my brain has
switched off after work!).

Wow, did not realise the ...

... compiling Gnome2.4 can be such a job in itself! I need it as it would be useful for my development work, plus I can do some usability testing. But utter frustration of one dependancies missing and re-compiling the modules took its toll today, as it ate into my work time, which was thankfully my development time).
Checking out was fine, followed the jhbuild instructions. It;s the actual compiling of the modules that were utter nuisance.
All I could say is, I am lucky to have a BF to save the day. I am back at my family home down in Limerick, and my laptop is back in the appartment in Dublin, whirring away as it is compiling away under the watchful eye of my ultra cute BF! :P
Well, it's late, to all you geeks out there, how do you guys do it at all!

Oopsys, Sun may have shot itself in the foot

All this SCO against IBM, and Sun totally in the loop as the "secret licencee" (The Register - IBM, Sun and HP locked in giant Unix OS spat). Some biased comments against Sun is expected from OSNews.com, their comments can be read here - Sun Expands UNIX Deal with SCO. And Micro$oft has joined in - NewsFactor.com - Sun Revealed as SCO's Secret Licensee.
Man, this geekfest soap opera has gone on so long, I just have to mention it. Although I do not think the bad publicity is what Sun wants!

Matrix blamed for what could have been a tragedy

I wish they don't blame it on The Matrix. Authorities would do anything to link it to violence in films, instead of focussing what was the root cause of all these problems...
