Irish Transport should learn from HK

The Octopus card is like an e-cash card type thing, where the only strings attached is loosing the card (which is just like loosing cash). No personal id, a/c's info are attached to the Octopus card. You can use it on nearly all public transport (the only one left is taxis, I think), but all mass transport take it. Oh, forgot to mention what this card is. It's a card you can buy at any station (or 7-11 shop) for $6 (as deposit). You can return the card and get re-imbursed with the deposit and whatever money is leftover. So what you do is just top up the card with some dough and just swipe to get through turnstiles at train stations (none of this entering card type thing! :) ), or swipe when you get on the bus (same comment I made earlier about entering cards!). And get this... you can swipe to pay for your groceries at your local convenience store. Oh, and fastfood restaurants take it and... so does StarBucks! (heeheehee) Public transport is already years ahead, as in efficiency, technology, how's poor ol' Ireland going to catch up? (Especially with our government determination to get the LUAS going! (Ha, that will be the day...)
Have a read, it's a good article: Cash cards rule, change is passé in Hong Kong From the Mercury News

Public transport in Ireland improving?

Improving? Well, that is what I gathered from the news today about plans for our national trains and Dublin buses.

Articles from the Irish Indo online that new state of the art trains will be available from Autumn 2005.
"The new Spanish-made traincarriages unveiled yesterday will include in-seat radio and music, reading lights, table lamps, and adjustable seating." Athough this is for 1st class only. (grumble)
They will "operate on all regular Dublin-Cork services, and key Dublin-Limerick and Dublin-Galway routes" in Autumn 2005. (We'll just have to wait an see)
"Bringing them into service will allow other air-conditioned carriages, currently in use on the Dublin-Cork run, to replace older carriages on other inter-city routes." (Wow, AC trains, wonder when that would ever appear here in Ireland!)
See article (Need to register, but it's free) - Rail service unveils new €117m luxury train fleet

Tracking system for Dub buses. They are really serious about it, and are bringing it in (finally!). The idea is :
" A tracking device on the bus relays information to a central tracking station which uses satellite technology to predict when the next bus is scheduled.
A bus stop screen relays electronic information to those waiting and the tracking centre details delays caused by accidents, gridlock or other problems."
They are currently running a pilot prgram on the Lucan QBC and the Ballyfermot and Clondalkin QBCs, and are hoping to expand on it.

Friday saga

Was back to Limerick for me on Friday, so my usual leave work, get bus to Heuston station(ok, I do this anyway since I live opposite Heuston!), and get my return ticket. I notice that there was a huge delay, take this one example, the 17:20 train to Limerick just started boarding at 17:50! I was thinking to myself, "Ok, what has happened now?". I know there are delays but 1/2 hour delay? So I got my ticket and went back to the appartment and packed my bag for home. I found out that there was a delay on the Portlaois line from a 10:45 Cork train to Dublin. The engine broke down and a 2nd engine sent to pull the broken down train also failed, as it was not strong enough. So the passengers endured an additional 3 hours to their 3 hours journey...

Apart from a near birth of a baby on board, everything was sorted out quick time. People will be refunded etc. etc... Well, now it's about me. I waited for the train at platform 6, waved at my BF and flatmate across the way (wishing I was back at the appartment), and got on the train the usual time. We left 10 mins later then scheduled, and arrived 5 mins late. The thing was, the train drive was profusely apolagising for the 5 mins that we were late arriving at Colbert station in Limerick, and apologises for any inconvenieces caused!!! That was an evening to remember, Iarnoid Roid Eireann apologising for being 5 mins late! Wow, I remember I was delayed for upto 1/2 hour (I think it maybe more), and not a word was said. It did not really help though, that it was on News 6 and the head of IRE was totally trashed to pieces by the newscaster at the time. That was my Friday!

Fear of America?

So, continuation of "Bowling for Columbine". From my BF's blog, is there a build up of fear of US in Europe? It does not really help with Sky News is all I can say. Sky News is so bad in showing paparazzi news, replaying it over and over again. It's sister news that comes on late at night is no better (since this is a cut-down of US news, no US ads). Not to mention COPs being replayed to death, first on Sky One and now on TV3. The only news that keeps some people sane is EuroNews early in the morning (very late at night), they are not as biased., and show important news most of the time.

This morning I am...

....so not awake! Went to the Moby gig last night (with Lamb as the support act). I pretty much enjoyed it all very much. It certainly made up for Saturday's disaster with the "Toys 4 big boys" exhibition. I am just tired, did not get enough sleep, things have been going wrong this morning at work, and it is all down to tiredness-related clumsiness. (Sorry Kieran for making such a mess this morning for you to tidy up!) At least I got my t-shirt. I asked for a small size but they only had children's 9-11 or adult medium. I did not want a night shirt so I opted for the the kiddie size. (Hmph!) Anyway, I have a coffee beside me to give me a bit of a push for the rest of today...sigh...

What did I do today?

Well, I did say I was going to the Toys 4 Big Boys exhibition this morning. Speaking from a lass point of view, I felt quite unsatisfied. We were duped into the sense of that there would be many gadgets, more state of the art technology you ever see before the year is out, extreme sports stalls... and I was actually quite curious how a lapdancing "gentleman's club" might advertised themselves, even that was a let down. The girls were quite lifeless. Stalls were all over the place, no sense of organisation.

The Lexus car from Minority Report was just an empty shell! I was not impressed by Vodaphone's promotion of the new Panasonic clamshell phone (not sure what model and I do not care :-p ) The lads pad was just mediochre, basically someone designed what a batchelor's pad should be like. Too many audio/visual exhibits. Not enough gadgets! Oish mentioned that if we were in an exhibition in Japan, we would have "gadgets coming out of our ears!". One hour was enough to view everything. Not impressed is my overall view. A very disappointing show all in all.
Had coffee across the road, noticing that a newbie in the shop kept on getting orders wrong. Then we headed to my BF's dad's house for more coffee and cake. After we went to get the bus to town. The bus took ages to arrive! By the time we got to town, we headed to Game (surprisingly!). I was getting hungry, we decided to go to Spud You Like in the Jervis centre.
Of course, my BF and I fell behind and as we were heading to the Food Hall, I was a wee bit distracted by The Bear Factory in the Jervis centre, and my BF got me a kitty cat! Seeing the cat being stuffed and stitched up was quite wierd to witness. Before the cat was stitched up, I had to warm up a heart, kiss and make a wish, and place it in the bear. There was a book of names to choose from, and after the cat was sown up, and was named "Fudge", we brought him up to the counter, and Fudge got a birth certificate! How cute. Plus the cat was placed in a carrier box...even more cute.
Anyhoo, we did go for some food, and we finished off the afternoon shopping for food to re-stock our supplies.
And now I am here (after some rest) blogging... :-p

What a day!

What an epic journey getting home this evening. Left work at 6pm, heard on the mini-bus to DART station that all bus lanes were open to everyone, so delays were to be expected...

So got the DART into Connelly, then waited God knows how long for the 90 bus in the puring rain. The bus eventually arrived, bus drive mentioned that it would be faster for everyone to walk (yeah right, in this weather!) as it took him 2 hours to make a round-trip (eep)! We chanced our arm anyway, so getting out of Connelly was, shall we say, slow and painful. Got to the quays nearly an hour later. At this stage my BF knows the ins and out of the Javascript book which makes it trivial to incorporate with RDF, datasources and XUL. I was half-conked out at that stage. We got so bored that we sms'd each other, even though we sat beside each other. But as we finally got nearer and nearer Hueston Station, I noticed a spray of water from the other side of the quays, it was the civil defense doing what's it looks like pumping water into mid-air towards the Liffey. But all I saw was the water been blown back onto the road. Was wondering for awhile why the other side of the quays had no traffic. Seems that the road was so badly flooded, all cars were diverted, and the Gardai were allowing some trucks, buses and other larger vehicles through. The thing was, the bus lanes should not have been made free for all. Bus lanes are for buses (and other public transport). Just look at the chaos it caused this evening. To top it off, I stepped into a big puddle. That is where my piccie comes in...

whykay_rain.png

So 3 hours (and a bit) later, I am home. At least there was warm dinner to come home to (thanks, Oish!).

Fastest Archeological Examination

Saw this in the Irish Independant online today (free subscription to read paper): 300-year-old ruins to 'disappear' forever Or you can read the Indo's story here...

THE 300 year-old building unearthed in the middle of Dublin's O'Connell Street is to be covered over in concrete again.

After it is examined by archaeologists, recorded and photographed, the historic 1690 ruins - probably stables - will disappear forever.

Duchas, the State heritage service, and the Railway Procurement Agency said that it would not be incorporated into the new look O'Connell Street - and will shortly be encased in concrete.

The discovery, revealed in yesterday's Irish Independent, is not expected to delay the Luas project, according to project officials. Edward Bourke, archaeologist with Duchas National Monuments Service, said the objective was to retain as much of the find intact underground after the Luas power station is installed at the site. The Luas team, he said, has agreed to see if it is feasible to reduce the space needed for the power station to preserve as much of the find as possible.

However, Mr Burke said it would not be possible to keep the discovery on view as this would involve the construction of a viewing platform which could damage other adjacent archaeological underground artefacts.

The building which dates back to 1690, when the street was much narrower, is actually featured in a street map of the area called Rocque's Map of Dublin 1756.

The buildings stood on Drogheda St - before it became Sackville St and then O'Connell St - before they were cleared by the Wide Streets Commission to allow the street to be widened.
*END OF NEWS STORY*

Thursday already!

What a ho-hum of a day! Manager watching an odd duck swimming past his first floor office window at home. Me wallowing in that fact that one of my mates is still on a vacation of a lifetime in Oz, and that I am still working in the company I have been trying to get out of for 2 years. And this miserable weather... At least I got one thing to look forward to, is that I am getting a coffee-maker from an ex-work collegue who is selling off his appliances. He's charging 15 smackeroos for it, what a bargain! :-)
Found out last night that Neil will be staying over at our flat for a week in 2 weeks time! One thing for sure, we will be getting one hefty phone bill in 2 months time. We were doing so well in reducing the bill and everything! Well begs I Oish to watch over Neil when he is working at our flat.

Why is getting broadband a chore?

Well, need I say more? Ok.. well, my flatmate was equiring about ADSL for our appartment from Eircom a month ago, and the response is an expensive package with their chosen modem only. Ridiculous....

In come Esat BT and came out with a better offer a few weeks later, basically half the price. It was only available in Dublin city centre, and to those nearest to the few exchanges that were in that vicinity. Guess what? We are just outside it. The enquiries person nicely replied that the exchange for our area will be ready next year. Doh! Well, Ericom has since offered a cheaper package with our own choice of modem if we wish, but still slightly dearer. And my flatmate said, that the person on the phone was much nicer when he rang them this time. So next step, we pruchase a new modem at Maplins, and then finally (hopefully) install it for us. (phew)

Over qualified?

If a person needs a job to get the little bit of extra dough, why would a person from an experienced profession be turned away? The person is willing to look for a job outside his/her profession, so the person is willing to work part-time. Some businesses are so picky to hire people. It should be fair for all people who are being hired, as long as they make an effort and seem to just want to do the job.

Little Miss Disappointed

Hmph, so I was not picked to be laid off. I know at this time of economic hardships in the technology sector, it is not a thing to want. But I was hoping with a bit of dough on the side, that I take one year off. That money can pay for my rent and a course I want to take up. Now I will have to save up money to last me a year's rent and more for other knick-knacks and take a year off that way. Quite annoyed and disappointed. I do not want to be stuck here all my life! :-(

Dublin's public transport

Grr, how infuriating can a bus and train make you? Very, I say VERY!

The one morning I want to make it into work by 9am, I end up waiting at the bus stop for 25 minutes! Yes, you read right, 25 minutes. And sometimes people would wonder why the buses are so packed, it does not really help when 3 busloads of people are trying to fit into 1 bus. On top of it all, becuase of crappy bus lanes to the city centre, the bus was stuck in traffic for nearly 20 minutes. That in turn made me miss the DART train, and waiting for another 12 minutes. Got into work finally at 9:15am. What a morning, and I did not even have my coffee yet...

Wonder should I tidy my desk?

Being optimistic and all, I wonder should I tidy my desk for tomorrow. If you don't know by now, my company is laying off people, and I am dreading the thought of the one not picked. Why?...

Well, it's seems like a great excuse to move on. I want to take a year off (not off backpacking or anthing remotely close) to take up a course I want to do a (9 months) long distance learning course, and do some contract work to pay for my rent (or pay it from the severance package). I have been working here for over 3 years now, and it is my first job out of college, so it's probably time to move on. I was hoping for this chance last year. I waited and endure this long, it is pure torture working here, my only excuse to put up with the tripe is that it pays for my rent.. that's it! Hmph, it's dark out and I am narkey, what more can I say...

Shakespeare condensed

Wow, back from the complete works of Shakespeare. It is very good. Boy, it's like I know every sonnet, every play he wrote intimidly... :) Heh! Actually, lots were very, very quickly skimmed over, at least Hamlet was repeated a few times (backwards included).
Well, it was a comfortable fit in the back of my BF's dad's car going to the Helix in DCU, but coming back we had another person in the back... so after many, many deep breaths and trying not to keel over from laughing, I managed to sqeeze into the car. Neil was so funny, I have never laughed so much in my life! He was sitting on top of Chris...teehee.. and he even phoned his GF, and she thought we were all completely pissed! (My sides were hurting so much at the time, actually I am still recovering from it!) All in all it was a very good night, I bid you... ADIEU!

My BF's the best!

I am so happy... I am not an expert at scanning and preparing piccies properly for putting them online until my BF helped me. Um, you may have gathered that some of my Coffee Monkey strip's characters are a bit blurry, apolagies for that! My BF was checking out what I was doing and gave me some handy hints on how to get what I wanted, post-scanned pictures that I can work with and resize without losing too much quality. He should have more handy hints like this on his own blog. Or maybe I should put up tecchie stuff I learnt online as well (or maybe not!). Anyway, must get ready for town, heading in to get shopping (and maybe a popcorn maker!) and preparing a meal for my BF's dad this evening before we head out to The Helix in DCU to see The Complete works of Shakespeare by The Reduced Shakespeare Company. This is suppose to be a very good comedy. Well, I'm off now.

Friday Early rant

My Senheisser monitor headphones is on the blink! My BF took it apart peice by piece, and he has whittle it down the problem to the acoustic pad which is glued shut. Hmph, I loved my head phones, and I did a search yesterday to see if I am the only person to experience this problem, and guess what, just my luck... I am the only one experiencing this problem. Everyone thought the HD20 is a blast.
Anhoo, I found this blog site, Expired Pineapple's Chinglish Blog. It's pretty much how I think of things, except I do not know how to write (nevermind typing) in Chinese!

So other blogs I have come across that looks interesting...

- Geek News Central
- How to Develop Software
- Dr. Dobb's Website
- Geek Press, some technolgy news.

Other good blog pages I found!

Right, I think I would better put everything on one blog instead of each seperate blog for every blog site that I find.

Here are some geeky sites :)
The Happiest Geek in the World" And the following link is brilliant (you need falsh for this) The Dark Side Switch
Bits, Bytes and Blog is another techie addict who has a blog (obviously!).
Beach Techie - Yes another techie blog. (Will it ever end? who knows!)
For all you Cubicle Dwellers out there!

A cool design site with tons of links to other blogs - xBlog: The visual thinking weblog
This is sort of in the design area (!) - Mandarin Design Daily.

Maybe Oish or Mick may want to link to the following blog - Cook Computing.
And this one for Mick - XML Hack.
And other ones for Oish - Mac Net Journal and Mac in Touch.
This is for them as well - A D&D compaign by email and it is blogged.

Hormonal Bitch is another blog I found today, and this was pretty entertaining.

And I am not sure what to think of this site!!! - Trained Monkey.

This is one clourful web site, some nice images - The Monkey Said..., I think this person writes novels.

I think this site is cute :) - Jelly Babies

Tuesday rant

Hmph, missed Couplings last night! Was watching a HK film, "Running out of Time 2". You would think it would be action packed, wouldn't you! But it was a mildly paced film, which has a no beginning as such, no middle and definitely no end. But it was a happy ending (ish). But to my amusement, my flatmate was un utter confusion. My BF and my flatmate were thinking of turning off the subtitles and add their own to it. And November is not a good time to get a melon. I chopped open one yesterday and it just exploded (a bit exaggerated), but it was like it was injected with water! It tasted bland, but very juicy. We threw what's left out anyway. So what am I upto today? Who knows!

Toilet Ettiquette!

Sometimes I wish people would know how to leave the toilet as it is like they first use it. Why do people like to block up toilets?

I know they don't have the intention of doing it, but at least have the common know-how not to shove the whole toilet roll down the loo after themselves and wondering why the toilet is not flushing it all down! It's not a mega flush of water, you nit-wits! It's like you need to teach then how to use the toilet again! But at my workplace, it seems to be the other building that is always blocked more though! Maybe it's the amount of non-engineers equal the amount of toilet blockage..heh, I'm probably biased towards engineers now. All these toilet-blockers, how will they survive if they were to live in Crete, where loo paper is to be dumped into a bin, not flushed. Or, if they live in Singapore, they would be fined for not flushing properly (and causing a blockage probably). Perhaps they do it so drain unblocker companies can stay in business, it's a cartel I tell yous! Well, at least the bright orange vans of one particular drainage company wakes me up in the mornings, being so bleeding bright and all. Anyway, my rant is over. Let all toilet-blockers smell like poo forever! (crikey, I am getting a bit overboard about this. )

First day of Winter

Brr, winter has officially arrived...it's November! Well today was a mix of Irish mist, Irish sun and definately Irish bitterness! :) Well, it is a Friday, so I will be off soon to go and catch my train, but I will need to drop home to get my driver's licence as from today onwards, the penalty points system is enforced. And 1 point for not producing a driver's licence...
