Cute cakes, fruit and moody Hong Kong

You know, I have always commented that cakes in Hong Kong are nicer than over here, and I have some pics as well from my recent trip to Hong Kong in July.

My aunt brought some fruit to a family dinner, and there is particulare one which looks wierd, but tastes nice. You just eat the white fleshy part, spit out the seeds, and careful not to get the red spongey skin on my clothes as they stain.

And Hong Kong is still as stifling as ever, here is a moody pic:

Saw this ad in the pharmacy window at Jervis Street. Hmm, my thoughts are... "Thanks, but no thanks!"

Google Adsense in IBC

Hey!

Just trying out Google Adsense, since I'm working on the site voluntarily and I fund the site personally, I might as well try and see if I can generate a Euro or two.

It's not too intrusive.

Later all!

Atom feed minor update

Just added the following tweaks to the atom feed generator for the IBC forum:

  • Shows avatar (if available) in the content section of the post in feed
  • Quotes are handled by using blockquotes now (although does not specifiy the user who is quoted, more of as a future improvement in the script)

[NEWS]Immigration cards

Just saw in the news that immigration cards are to be carried by non-EU immigrants residing in Ireland. This is to do with the new immigration bill that is being prepared by the government.

Atom feed now available for IBC forum

As I announced in the IBC forum that the Irish Born Chinese Forum now has its own Atom feed.

I finally got around to write it over the weekend, with some tweaks from Mick. And yes, it's written in Python using SQLAlchemy and ElementTree.

You can find the button on the right-hand side of the IBC blog (a bright orange and grey button). Just right-click and copy the link and subscribe to it in your favourite feed reader.

It gets updated every few minutes or so, so it does not bombard my sql server. So be patient, it will update.

Site link issues update (final)

Final update, it all works now. Woohoo! Sorry for any inconveniences this may have caused.

Update on the site issues

Dreamhost got back to me about the links that are now working:

It seems the dns for those domains was incorrect. I updated it in our
database and flushed our nameservers, so they should start working for
you as soon as your isp's nameservers clear their caches.

The one that is working at the moment is http://irishbornchinese.com.

http://irishbornchinese.kaykays.com is still down. Will check later in the day.

Site issues

Just got word from my bro, Vince (passed on from Wil that is) that the following are links are not working (error id: "bad_httpd_conf"):

I have contacted my host and hopefully they will resolve it soon (they always do ).

The last time this happened was bad DNS. So we have to have to wait and see.

Apolagies for any inconvenience caused.

You can still use http://kaykays.com and http://kaykays.com/board.

Site blocked?

Well there you have it, apparently a friend of mine who is in China at the moment cannot access my IBC site. He thinks it's blocked by Chinese authorities. Hmmm, annoying, I think it's my references to BBC news items and some other blocked sites that might have triggered it. Or, it could be a glitch. Ho-hum...

Update: Just got informed that it works again. Woohoo.

New security measures

With the recent scare, airlines have now adapted new security measures. So no hand luggage apart from the following in plastic bags:

  • pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags));
  • travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets);
  • prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (e.g. diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
  • spectacles and sunglasses, without cases.
  • contact lens holders, without bottles of solution.
  • for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags).
  • female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (e.g. tampons, pads, towels and wipes).
  • tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
  • keys (but no electrical key fobs)

I wonder if my dad can bring is medicated spray for his heart condition, it's for emergency use only. Probably need a doctor's letter with it or something. But I cannot imagine anyone would like to have their laptops placed in the cargo hold! Imagine all the baggage handlers, chucking the bags all over the place! I'm glad we came back from Stockholm this past Monday, Dublin airport is mad. Mick was carrying a laptop. And we had laptops to/from HK as well 2 months ago. This is pure insane. Imagine your typical business/first class traveller be might annoyed if they cannot carry on any of their equipment, especially their laptop. Boy, long journeys will be so not fun now without my DS or iPod.

Here are a few airlines that fly to Hong Kong that you should be aware of (although it seems to be exactly the same on what you can and cannot bring into the cabin):
