Multi-lingual nannies

I came across this article about bi-lingual nannies. It's very interesting. Although it is an American article, I can very well relate to being brought up in a bi-lingual environment.

I am very lucky to be brought up with so many relations around me that speak Cantonese, but I would have loved to be able to learn to read and write at that young age. But I think I was stubborn back then (probably just as stubborn nowadays), I remember crying when I was being taught to write my own Chinese name! I was about 3 or 4 then.

Holiday celebrations around the world

Saw this article on how other cultures celebrate Christmas. Nice little insight. :) Although in that titbit, he mention the Chinese pronunciation, and it's in Mandarin

It is Dun Che Lao Ren (dwyn-chuh-lau-oh-run) or "Old Man Christmas"

In Cantonese, it is Sin Dan Lo Yaan.

We just put up our tree (well my brothers do), and have a big Christmas dinner with the staff on the 24th, and open our pressies when we get home. Then family dinner on 25th. That is because the restuarant is normally closed for 2 days (out of the 3, the other one is Chinese new year).

Is it similar to other Chinese overseas? Since there are no comments here, you can discuss this over at IBC messageboard.

IBC Board Changes

The IBC messageboard has been upgraded to 2.0.11.18 and also added a new style. The new style is also as default.

I also added the Unofficial Fight School in the menu on the right-hand-side.

My bro has a post in the forum duscussing about martial arts (includes link on how I started the Fight School forum).

HK in the 20s-60s

Pics from 1920s-1960s from Big White Guy. Really nice depicting what it was like back then. It reminds me of the watercolours from the art museum in Tsim Sha Tsui of when HK was literally a rural island. No mega buildings of any kind. Although I find some of the paintings showing how Chinese are treated back then by the colonist a tad bit hard to take in. But it's history. You get to learn alot.

Not surprising...

... that alot of new immigrants buy homes in Ireland.

It's crazy, just 2 years and there is a huge jump in the percentage of non-nationals buying houses here.

Nearly 23 hours from HK to London...

...non-stop! On a Boeing 777LR. But that is one long haul flight. I wonder, if they can do that, they should have flights from Shannon/Dublin straight to HK. That would be cool!

Since I don't let comments on my blog anymore (stoopid sp@mmers ) So you can discuss this at the IBC board.
