Standing waiting at the GPO today, I noticed the amount of Asian people strolling around O'Connell street. Wow, I wonder what is the ratio of Chinese people to Dublin people in Dublin city?
I can already see the area split up between different set of Chinese people. The local Chinese, HK Chinese usually hang around, and have shops open in the south side of the city. The north of the city (mainly the street off Henry Street) is a usual hangout for mainland Chinese people.
Now I wonder if it is a still a good idea for a Chinatown... cost of land/shops aside that is.
i am a hk/canadian immigrant, transplanted to dublin a couple months ago, to work for a little while ... i must have done something to piss my manager off. heh.
hey, just want to say i love what u have done. despite not being an IBC or CBC myself, i can appreciate the "special" identity they have.
meanwhile, i recently saw this sign outside an internet cafe on the south side. reverse racism ? is this legal ? u know more places where chinese can get 60% discounts ?
Posted by: marcus on February 16, 2003 09:36 PMActually 'reverse racism' is still racism, just because its not racism against a minority but against the Irish, does not make it different. While this ad is completely illegal due to equality legislation(which I dont support as it attacks my freedom of association). It's no doubt unoffically permitted due to fears of accusations of racism or persecution.
Posted by: stephen on February 24, 2003 02:42 AMit's funny, i've been in dublin since october, and though i am not ethnically chinese nor a chinese national everybody here seems to assume that a person with an asian face is automatically "chinese." it's got to be one of the most annoying aspects of living in this city. i especially like the compliments on my "good english." or, the surprise when i have an american accent. as for racism, trust me, i've seen plenty of evidence that there is far more racism BY the irish against any non-white peoples than the other way around. I've been "profiled" due to my PERCIEVED ethnicity and national identity many times. i find it hard not to smirk when these incidents happen because as soon as the perpetrators find out i'm an american they leave me alone, so you know it's just plain old bigotry...
